Our Mission

Build the people. Build the block.

SHOCK THE WORLD is a North Richmond nonprofit putting opportunity back where it belongs. We train residents — youth and adults — for real trades and careers, restore long-blighted property into a community campus, and bring clean air and clean energy to a neighborhood that's carried more than its share of the burden.

The Market Ave building as it stands today

Built 1940s · Shipyard Era

Built to power a war effort. Reborn to power a community.

North Richmond became home to Black families who came west in the 1940s to work the WWII shipyards and put down roots. After decades of disinvestment, much of that legacy was left boarded up.

We're bringing this block back — not by tearing down the past, but by restoring it. Adaptive reuse means new roofing, electrical, plumbing, HVAC, ADA access, and security, while honoring what these walls have always meant.
